Taking a tree down leaves a stump, and a stump is a problem that does not solve itself. Left in the ground it stays a trip hazard, wrecks mower blades, sends up suckers, and slowly turns into a colony site for carpenter ants and decay fungi — often within a few feet of your foundation. Grinding vs. Full Removal
These are two different jobs and the words get used interchangeably, so it is worth being clear.
- Stump grinding uses a rotating cutting wheel to chew the stump and major surface roots into chips, working down below grade. It is faster, far less invasive, and leaves your lawn largely intact. This is the right answer for almost everyone.
- Full stump removal means excavating the entire root plate out of the ground. It leaves a large crater and disturbed soil, and it is only worth the disruption when something is going in that spot that cannot tolerate any remaining wood — a foundation, a pool, or certain hardscape.

How Deep Do You Grind?
It depends on what you are putting there, and it should:
- Grass or seed: roughly 6 to 10 inches below grade is plenty of clean soil depth to establish a lawn.
- New planting beds or a replacement tree: deeper, and we take out more of the lateral root mass so roots have somewhere to go.
- Patio, shed, or hardscape: deeper still, because wood left under a slab keeps decomposing and the ground settles unevenly on top of it years later.

Why Leaving It Is a Bad Idea
- Pests. Decaying stumps are exactly what carpenter ants and termites look for. A rotting stump near the house is an invitation with an address on it.
- Disease reservoir. Root rot organisms live on in a stump and can move to nearby healthy trees through root contact.
- Suckering. Plenty of species — maples and poplars in particular — will keep throwing shoots from the stump and roots for years, and you will be cutting them every season.
- Hazard and nuisance. Hidden in long grass, a stump is something to trip over and something that destroys mower blades.
- Wasted space. You cannot properly plant, build, or level over it.
What to Expect on the Day
We locate and flag utilities before the wheel touches anything — underground gas, water, electric, and irrigation lines around a stump are a real risk and we do not guess at them. Grinders are compact enough to fit through most gates, though very tight side yards occasionally need a smaller machine.
Grinding produces a surprising volume of chips — usually more material than the stump appeared to hold. You can keep them as mulch, or we haul them out and backfill the hole with clean topsoil so you can seed straight away. Say which you want when we quote.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I plant a new tree in the same spot?
Not straight into the ground-out hole. Leftover wood chips tie up nitrogen as they break down and will starve a young tree. Either plant a few feet to the side, or have us grind deep, remove the chips, and backfill with proper soil.
How long does it take?
A typical residential stump is well under an hour once the machine is in position. Access, stump diameter, and how much root flare has to come out are what move that number.
Will it wreck my lawn?
There will be some track marks and disturbance around the work area, which recovers quickly. Grinding is dramatically gentler on turf than excavating a root plate out.
Do you grind stumps from trees you did not remove?
Yes, routinely. Old stumps left behind by other companies or previous owners are a large share of this work.
